Let’s be honest… at some point, someone in your household has done it. Maybe it’s your partner who claims it’s “eco-friendly.” Maybe it’s your kid who couldn’t hold it in. Or maybe… it’s you (no judgment here). But the age-old question remains: is peeing in the shower actually unhygienic or damaging to your bathroom surfaces? Let’s settle this bubbly debate once and for all.

The science behind the splash

Here’s the good news…. fresh urine is technically sterile when it leaves your body (unless you’ve got an infection). It’s mostly water with a dash of urea, salts, and other natural waste. So, from a health perspective, the act itself isn’t going to unleash a toxic biohazard in your shower.

However, here’s where the “ew” factor kicks in. Urine left to sit can start to smell, stain grout, and encourage bacterial growth. Especially in warm, damp environments (aka your shower). Over time, that slightly yellow tinge or funky odour? Yeah, that’s not just your imagination. It’s the result of urine residue and mineral build-up.

So… does it damage surfaces?

If your shower has non-porous surfaces like ceramic or acrylic, it’s not likely to cause serious damage. But if you’ve got porous grout, stone, or older tiles, the acidity in urine can wear things down over time. Eventually leaving behind discoloration or that stubborn smell no amount of eucalyptus spray seems to fix.

Keep your shower clean (and fresh)

If your household has a serial shower-pee-er (again, no judgment), you’ll want to stay on top of cleaning.
Here’s how to keep things hygienic:

  • Rinse right away. A quick rinse with hot water can stop build-up before it starts.

  • Weekly deep clean. Use an eco-friendly cleaner  like a vinegar and bicarb soda mix to break down residue and keep bacteria at bay.

  • Don’t forget the grout. Give it a scrub with an old toothbrush and natural cleaner. Your nose will thank you later.

  • Add some aromatherapy. A few drops of lemon or tea tree essential oil can freshen things up and add antibacterial benefits.

So, while the occasional shower pee isn’t going to ruin your bathroom, letting it linger definitely might. Bottom line? If you’re going to multitask, at least make sure you’re giving your shower a proper clean after.

Because nothing says “self-care” quite like sparkling tiles and zero lingering regrets.
