House inspections have a funny way of making you suddenly notice every dusty skirting board, fingerprint and cobweb you’ve happily ignored for the last six months. But getting your rental ready for an inspection doesn’t have to mean spending an entire weekend cleaning until your back gives up.
The easiest way to tackle it is to spread the jobs across the week. A little each day means you can get through the inside and outside of your home without feeling like you’re living in a cleaning marathon.
Here’s how we’d break it down.
7 days before inspection: walk through the house
Before you start scrubbing, walk through your home as though you’re seeing it for the first time.
Look at the things an inspector is likely to notice: marks on walls, dusty windowsills, dirty light switches, scuffed doors, cobwebs, overgrown gardens and anything that looks like it has been forgotten.
Make a quick list of the jobs that need attention. Don’t start cleaning everything immediately. Knowing what needs doing first makes the whole week feel much more manageable.
6 days before inspection: tackle the kitchen
Give the kitchen some proper attention.
Clean the stovetop, splashback, rangehood and cupboard fronts, paying extra attention to handles where fingerprints and grime build up. Wipe inside the oven and microwave, clean the sink and taps, and give the fridge a quick check.
Don’t forget the less obvious spots, like the top of the rangehood, around the edges of the cooktop and behind small appliances.
5 days before inspection: bathrooms and laundry
This is the day for the rooms that usually need the most elbow grease.
Clean showers, baths, toilets, vanities, mirrors and floors. Pay attention to grout, taps, shower screens and those little corners where dust and hair like to gather.
In the laundry, wipe down the outside of appliances, clean the laundry tub and check around the floor and skirting boards.
4 days before inspection: bedrooms and living areas
Now work through the rooms that are mostly about dust, clutter and presentation.
Dust ceiling fans, light fittings, shelves, skirting boards and window sills. Vacuum thoroughly, including edges and corners, and mop hard floors.
Decluttering makes a huge difference here too. You don’t need your home to look like a display house. Just make sure surfaces aren’t overflowing and everything has a place.
3 days before inspection: windows, doors and walls
This is where a home can suddenly look much fresher.
Clean accessible windows and glass doors, wipe down window tracks and dust blinds. Give doors, door frames and handles a clean, and spot-clean obvious marks on walls.
You don’t necessarily need to wash every wall from top to bottom. Focus on the areas that are visibly marked or grubby.
2 days before inspection: outside
Don’t forget the outside of your rental.
Mow the lawn, trim overgrown edges, sweep paths and patios, remove cobwebs from outdoor areas and tidy garden beds. Clear away leaves and general clutter, and make sure bins and outdoor areas look clean and presentable.
If you have a garage, shed or outdoor storage area, give those a quick tidy too.
1 day before inspection: the final reset
You’ve done the big jobs, so today should be about finishing touches rather than starting another cleaning marathon.
Take the rubbish out, put away anything sitting around, vacuum high-traffic areas and give the kitchen and bathrooms a quick wipe.
Then do one final walk around the house.
Open the blinds, let some fresh air through where appropriate and check the things you might normally overlook. Look at your home from an inspector’s perspective rather than your usual “I’ve lived here for years and stopped noticing that” perspective.
And that’s it!
The biggest trick is not trying to do everything at once.
Breaking your inspection clean into small, manageable jobs across seven days means you’re much less likely to end up panic-cleaning at 11pm the night before.
